Maria Halij

Maria Halij, age 102 of Vineland, died peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2016. She was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the USA in 1949. Maria was an educator, a homemaker, a political activist, a member of Plast scouting, and a leading figure in several women's Ukrainian organizations here and abroad, including the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations Finance Committee of America, and the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. She was also a member of the Association of Ukrainian Journalists and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and a longtime member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church of Millville where she sang in the choir. Maria was spirited, sang and performed in theater groups, had a youthful disposition and a generous heart, and was well known for her Ukrainian embroidery and cuisine. Maria is survived by her daughter Marta; two grandchildren, Lex and Olenka; two great grandsons; and nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. John Halij in 2003. There will be a viewing on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 801 Carmel Road, Millville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
