    Edmund C. Birnstiel

    August 17, 1923 - February 5, 2018

Birnstiel, Edmund Charles. It is with great sadness that the family has announced his passing on Monday February 5, 2018.  Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1923, he moved his family to Millville in 1947, shortly after his return from WW II.  He served his country from 1941-1945 in the 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester in the South Pacific and was awarded numerous medals and citations including the Purple Heart and Silver Star.  He retired from Kimble Glass in Vineland and was the Sunday School Superintendent for Millville Church of the Nazarene and Central Baptist Church for many years.  He was a baseball and softball umpire for 40 years.  He was an avid historian and loved traveling in New England.  He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Irene, sister Mattilda, sons Edmund (Betty),  Timothy (Linda), and James (Pat), 8 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  In addition, he had one son Wes (Diane), sister Edith and one grandson who were pre-deceased.  His infectious storytelling about history and the war will be missed by many. A private ceremony was held at Christy Funeral Home and a burial at the Veterans Cemetery in Bridgeton.  The family asks that any donations be made to the Cumberland Christian School (Physical Education Department). Memories may be shared at www.christyfuneralservice.com.
